The Town of Mattapoisett was founded in 1857 and is located in Plymouth County. The name Mattapoisett is believed to have come from an old Indian word meaning “a place of resting”.
For a blast into the past visit the Historical Museum to learn all about how the land was found and how the town was started.
Those who get a chance to visit the Ship Yard Park or Ned’s Point lighthouse will begin to understand the Wampanoag judgment that Mattapoisett is a place of rest.
